Total Rehab to offer baseline concussion testing for L-S Athletes

Total Rehab is offering pre-screening for concussions this year on Wednesday, August 2, from 9am - 4pm, in the Total Rehab office next to the fitness center.

The screening will take about 20 minutes as we have changed the testing this year to incorporate some upgraded Scat 6 tests.

The tests will be $15 each and the athlete/parent will be responsible for paying this when they arrive for the screening.

Parents or athletes will need to contact Laurie at Total Rehab via email at laurie@totalrehab-pt.com directly for scheduling the screenings.

Elementary and Middle School

As we swing into August, we come to the yearly realization that summer break is starting to wind down.  That may bring about a variety of thoughts and emotions among both parents and students.  One question asked a lot by parents this time of the year is, "What can I be doing to help my child get ready for the school year?"   There are a lot of appropriate ways to tackle this question, but I would like to offer a simple answer.  Help them truly engage in and experience the world around them.  Our life experiences are a great resource to help our students gain background knowledge that will help them comprehend texts, make connections to science phenomenon, make sense of real-life applications in math, and appreciate the historical significance of events that have shaped our communities.

I know many families have vacations and trips planned.  Those are wonderful opportunities for authentic learning to take place.  If possible, add a museum or state park to your agenda.  Involve your children in the logistics for planning and packing for the trip.  Help them understand your thinking as you organize the schedule and what needs to be prepared.  During your trip, get the kids talking about what they are seeing and experiencing.  Share your own observations and discoveries.  We are all learners and kids love it when they see their parents get excited about learning something new.  Once you have returned home, have the kids help you create a simple memory book with pictures, postcards, or drawings of what you experienced together.  This would make a wonderful keepsake for years to come.

The same suggestions can be used on a smaller scale for an afternoon trip to a state park or a local attraction close to home.  Some ideas could include state parks, Wagaman Mill and Museum, Neal Smith Wildlife Refuge, Newton Arboretum and Botanical Gardens, etc.  Even if your children or family have visited these areas before, there is always something new to discover and enjoy.  The older my children get, the more I understand how quickly this phase of our lives goes by and the difference between physically being around one another and really connecting and learning from each other.  I would encourage all of us to find some opportunities to be intentional in communicating and creating positive memories.  Our kids will learn and be reinforced about many important ideas, including how much they are loved.  Enjoy the rest of your summer!

Summer reading ideas

Our local libraries have such amazing resources for our families.  If you have not visited our library in Sully or Lynnville this summer, this is a great time to stop in and check out the books, videos, and other materials that can be used to help your kids learn and grow.
