High School

HS students and Winter Driving

For those families with a student who drives to school, please note that parents always have parental discretion as to whether or not their student is capable of navigating the roads. This includes students who attend DMACC classes in Newton. There is a potential that school at L-S could be cancelled and DMACC is still in session. I would ask that a parent simply contacts us in the main office to let us know if they have concerns about the driving conditions. Parents can do that by calling the main office (leave a message before 8:00am) or emailing Susan Jansen (jansen@lshawks.com).

Absences and Appointments

We understand that at times your child will need to be absent from school. Here are some quick reminders regarding absences and appointments.

Thank you for this important communication!

6th Grade Mock Trial

Mr. Johnson's 6th grade language arts class had the chance to do a mock trial over a book they read in class, Tuck Everlasting.   Students were divided into a defense team, the prosecution, witnesses that would testify, and a jury.  Judge Johnson proceeded over the case.  The student prosecution lawyers presented opening arguments and called several witnesses to the stand to try to convince their peers that Mae Tuck is guilty!  The student defense team tried to present a case that Mae Tuck should not be sentenced for the crime, but it was self-defense.  The jury will be deliberating on the evidence provided to see which team presented the most compelling argument.  Judge Johnson will then give the final verdict based on the jury's recommendation.......  Will Mae be free or will she be sentenced for her crime?  It's up to the jury to decide.

SICL Honor Choir

On Tuesday, November 14th, nine 7th and 8th grade students participated in the SICL Honor Choir hosted by Lynnville-Sully.  The students had been rehearsing specific music for a few weeks prior to the event and then spent approximately four hours working with a guest conductor to prepare a joint performance with students from the other SICL schools.  The L-S students who took part in the event were Madison Jochems, Payton Bowlin, Trycer Arends, Natalie Nore, Tess Dunlap, Timothy Anderson, Mandeesa Vos, Hayden Lewis, and Nikolai.  Their hard work resulted in a beautiful performance that was enjoyed by friends, family, and our community.

Thinkfast assembly

SAFE Iowa and Honda sponsored a high energy, interactive assembly for our middle school students earlier this month!  Students took part in a game show answering questions from a wide variety of categories with an emphasis on safe driving topics.  Intertwined with learning about responsible driving, select students were also given the opportunity participate in both acting and dancing competitions.  The event came to a close with four students taking part in a final round of trivia.  Trace Carlson, Dawson Brummel, Terriyah Carter, and Paisley Vos were each rewarded with Amazon gift cards for winning various activities.  Thank you to Deputy Corey VanKooten and L-S Middle School Student Council Sponsor Hannah Van Haaften, for organizing this memorable event for students!

Veterans Day

The third-grade students recently participated in their annual Veterans Day project. Mrs. Edsen, Mrs. Jansen, and Mrs. Yoder guided the students to gain a deeper understanding and appreciation for veterans as they learned about the commitments and sacrifices of those who serve in the military.

During the project, students identified veterans with local ties and participated in a letter-writing campaign to express gratitude for their service. This year, the students collectively wrote 120 letters, reaching individuals across 32 towns and 14 states. Notably, 25 letters were sent to individuals staying in a local veteran home.

This impactful experience not only helped students grasp the content and structure of a friendly letter but also reinforced the importance of respecting our military personnel. A particularly rewarding aspect for the students was receiving replies to their letters.  Well done, third graders!
