School Bus Safety Week: October 21-25
Each school year, school buses find their way through our Iowa’s cities, towns and rural areas. PLEASE be extra cautious in watching students heading to and from the buses. Iowa Department of Transportation website has great graphics to illustrate the state of Iowa's expectations for school bus safety stops. Check it out!
Middle School and High School Parents,
Please consider joining us for parent-teacher conferences in November. Conferences for 6th grade students will be scheduled using a google from that was recently sent out. All other conferences (grades 7-12) are on a walk in basis.
We hope to see you on those nights for a great opportunity to partner together to support our students!
If you have any questions about P/T conferences please contact us and we are happy to help!
A talented group of middle school and high school students are hard at work this fall producing the musical Into the Woods Jr. Students are not only performing in the show but many are sharing their leadership skills by being involved in the design and technical process as well. Into the Woods Jr. will be performed at Lynnville-Sully on Friday, Nov. 15, and Saturday, Nov. 16th at 7 pm. Be there!
If anyone (including community members) would like to donate blood on November 6th, between 9:30-12:30 please email Tara Conover at conover@lshawks.com.
Students must be 16 and have a parent sign a permission slip.
Hawks, please don't forget about our awesome Silver Cord program! Volunteer work presents a great opportunity for students to prepare for their future, as well as to improve the Lynnville-Sully Community School District and surrounding areas.

Leader in Me:
Habit 1 - Be Proactive
Take a moment to explore the first Habit we have introduced to our 6-12 students: Be Proactive.
The slides at the left should allow you to click through and see examples of how we are helping our students to take control of their own thoughts and actions.
These Leader in Me lessons are being taught once per week (typically on Wednesdays) in small groups.
On Wednesday, Oct. 9 the Lynnville-Sully 5th graders made their annual trip to the State Historical Museum and State Capitol. At the Historical Museum, the students were able to view exhibits related to Iowa's natural resources, Iowa's path to statehood, the roles Iowans have played in Hollywood and the film industry and RAGBRAI. The day concluded with a tour of the Iowa State Capitol building. The students were able to learn about the history of the capitol. The tour included seeing a replica of the USS Iowa battleship, dolls of the first ladies and gentleman, and the stunning architecture and features of the capitol. Students also got to see the Iowa House and Senate chambers, the Law Library, and climb the stairs to the dome. The highlight of this year's tour was a trip into the governor's office, which is something only a handful of classes have gotten to do in the past 20 years.
The 3rd grade classes embarked on an exciting field trip to Living History Farms this week. The students traveled back in time by exploring an Iowa farm from the 1700s, a Pioneer farm from the 1850s, and a crop farm from the 1900s. The 3rd graders learned about a variety of farming techniques and how important these crops were during each time period. Students also toured the 1876 town of Walnut Hill where they visited a drug store, a blacksmith shop, Flynn Mansion, and the Tangen House!
K-5 families are invited to join us for a night of literacy fun on Tuesday, October 22nd from 5:30-7:00 pm. Families are encouraged to stop by the K-5 classrooms to take part in a variety of hands on activities and visit the MS Gym to enjoy a snack provided by the LSCEFF. As students and families participate in activities throughout the night, they will fill out their raffle cards. The raffle drawing will take place during morning announcements on Wednesday, October 23rd. We hope you are able to join us for this fun family night!
In early October the kindergarten classes took a trip to Jacob Krumme Nature Preserve. While on their expedition, the students had the opportunity to go on a nature walk to look for animal tracks and other evidence of animals that live in the area. Their favorite part of the day was pond netting, where they were able to catch minnows and crayfish in their nets.
Mark your calendars for these upcoming events!

Fall has definitely arrived and our students are making the most of it during their time outside on the playground. As colder weather continues to make its appearance, please take some time to double-check that your child has what is needed for a variety of weather conditions. It will be time for snow pants, snow boots, hats, gloves, winter coats, etc. soon and we want to make sure the kids can comfortably enjoy their time during recess. If your family would benefit from assistance in providing cold weather items for your child, please contact Teri Bowlin, PreK-5 Principal, or Michaela Gunsaulus, PreK-5 Guidance Counselor. We would be happy to work with you to make sure those needs are met through our Student Assistance Fund and all communication will be kept confidential.
