WINTER WEATHER REMINDER:
As the winter season approaches, please be aware of where you can find information about our latest closings and delays. Stay safe this winter, Hawks!
Dear Lynnville-Sully Families,
As we move through the hustle and bustle of another busy school year, I want to pause and challenge each of us—myself included—to "put first things first," a critical habit from The Leader in Me framework. This habit reminds us to focus on what truly matters and prioritize the things that bring the most value to our lives.
For our students, their grades, extracurricular activities, and commitments are important, but nothing compares to the lasting impact of strong relationships with those who care for them the most—you. That’s why I challenge you to carve out intentional time each week to check in with your child face-to-face.
This doesn't need to be a grand gesture or a lengthy conversation. It can be as simple as:
Sharing a meal together: Make family dinner a no-phone zone, even if it’s just once or twice a week.
Starting a tradition: Use car rides to or from activities as opportunities for meaningful conversations.
Scheduling a 10-minute check-in: Set aside a time—maybe before bed or on Sunday evenings—to ask your child open-ended questions like, “What went well for you this week?” or “What’s something you’re excited or nervous about?”
Joining them in their world: Sit down to watch a favorite show or ask them to teach you a new skill or game they enjoy.
Life is busy, and it often feels like there aren’t enough hours in the day. But when we put first things first and make time to connect with our kids, we’re not only strengthening our relationships—we’re modeling a powerful life habit that will stay with them forever.
Thank you for your partnership in supporting the growth and success of our students. Let’s commit to putting first things first and showing our kids that, no matter how busy life gets, they are always our priority.
Sincerely,
Aaron Shipley

The Lynnville-Sully Band and Choir programs recently performed at our annual Winter Concert on December 12.
The concert started with the high school band playing: Fanfare Prelude on Westminster Carol, Silent Night, and Tripwire. The junior high band followed playing Air of Nobility and Christmas Carol Suite. After the bands were done playing, the junior high choir started the choir portion of the concert singing Little Drummer Boy and Winter Wonderland. High school choir ended the evening of music singing Veni, Emmanuel, Keep Your Lamps!, and Christmas, in about three minutes.
The Middle School Student Council held its annual food drive. Under the coordination of Mrs. Melanie Sharp, the food drive was presented to all classes by student council members who used the opportunity to practice their public speaking skills.
Over 2,200 non-perishable items collected (the most ever collected).
The Elementary class winner was 2nd grade with 338 items.
The Middle School class winner was 7th grade with 365 items.
14 student council members sorted and packaged close to 50 boxes of goods to send to help 14 local families.
Hawks, please don't forget about our awesome Silver Cord program! Volunteer work presents a great opportunity for students to prepare for their future, as well as to improve the Lynnville-Sully Community School District and surrounding areas.

3rd-6th grade students performed in the winter concert on December 12th. Titled "Lights, Camera, Christmas!," the concert's storyline revolved around the creation of a Santa Claus movie but the characters were unsure of what kind of movie to make. They experimented with various genres such as Spaghetti-Western, Film Noir, and Superhero themes! The 6th graders took charge of all the speaking roles and solos, as well as managing the lights and sound for the concert. A total of seven songs were performed during the show.
K-5 students have been spending the month of December spreading holiday cheer by participating in our festive fun dress up days, donating food to our canned food drive, and enjoying a variety of fun holiday activities in their classrooms. Everyone is fully embracing the holiday spirit and are truly making this season special!
As a Leader in Me school, there are five core paradigms that guide our decisions, behaviors, and results. So far this year, we have been focusing on two of the paradigms - everyone can be a leader and everyone has genius. It can sometimes be challenging to know what conversations we can have at home with our kids to support what they are talking about at school. Here are a few suggestions of questions you might use that would connect to Leader in Me.
*What are your strengths - what are you really good at and why?
*What strengths do you see in (family member's name) and why?
*How do those strengths help our family?
*What do you love learning about? How can you teach me/show me what you know about that?
These questions can lead to great discussions with your child about leadership and open the door to future ideas about ways you can work together to accomplish the goals you have set together as a family.
The second graders spent some time last week showing off their artistic abilities by making gingerbread houses. The houses were assembled by using milk cartons, hot glue, and graham crackers. A variety of ingredients were brought in by both 2nd grade classes that they used to decorate their gingerbread houses. Thank you so much to all the parents who provided supplies and volunteered to assist with candy distribution, clean up and supervision.
Both 3rd grade classes have been trying their hand at learning different types of poetry. So far they have written Name Acrostic Poems, Cinquain Poems and Haiku Poems. Here are a few examples of their haiku poems.
"Green trees in the rain
Animals' tracks in fresh snow
Bushes everywhere"
by Landon Downing
"Cold snow to play in
Tree and presents, it's Christmas!
Bright lights on the house"
by Kylie Vander Molen
Our elementary students will once again be encouraged to participate in a winter reading and math challenge during the holiday break. Mrs. Bowlin has been kicking off the challenge by visiting each grade level to read a holiday book and talk about the importance of spending time with friends and family during this special time of the year.
We are hopeful that families will take advantage of the ideas listed on the winter challenge sheet to find fun ways to make memories with their children that involve reading and math. Anytime the students complete one of the challenges, they can color in the corresponding activity box. Students who take part in at least one reading activity and one math activity will be invited to participate in a game of BINGO. Those students who complete at least ten challenges (5 reading and 5 math) will also get to take home a brand new book the day we play BINGO.
Winter Reading and Math Challenge sheets will be coming home in backpacks and also sent to families through email. We hope you enjoy these activities!
